House Rules

House Rules – 7.5 and beyond

We shifted to 7.5 in April 2012 under Ken’s tutelage. Here are our current House Rules:
1-Warriors get one extra dice per level for their main weapon. If they actively use another weapon they don’t get this advantage to start with but they can build up proficiency with more than one weapon. E.G. Egbut the Slug is a L2 warrior – he loves to bludgeon things. He gets 5 dice not 3 when he attacks with this weapon. A friend, Norrie Ahi, introduces him to the delights of fighting with a serrated spatula. Egbut gives at go but only gets the standard 4 dice. Surviving the Dungeon of the Unlikely Settings and training for a couple of months afterwards, he gets to be as skilled with the spatula as he was with the bludgeon. He still gets 5 dice for the latter but he now gets 6 dice for the former.
2-Wizards are trained to fight but they can use a war hammer, if they are strong enough, better than they can a jambiya so they get the full dice for either weapon but they only get half combat adds. They just don’t know how to turn strength, luck, dexterity and speed into a good fighting technique. Before khremm (BK), things were worse because the L5 wizard probably had great strength for casting spells and great dexterity for the same reason. He could most likely punch out the L5 warrior with one hand tied behind his back. Not right! This makes warriors the best fighters, as they should be. (Rogues get full adds but no extra dice and no armour advantage.)
3-Now we understand SPD to be reaction speed, we take STR and SPD and average them for sprinting speed. Could add CON into the mix for marathon running…
4-Throw a 1 and a 2 on an INT SR when casting a spell and you cast a spell right enough but it’s the wrong spell! You panic and fluff it – you cast a random spell you know of the same level at the WIZ cost of the spell you intended. Nasty if you fail a Poor Baby and cast a … well, L2 spells aren’t as lethal perhaps – maybe Glue You would be unfortunate. Anyhow, we did that with Ken and it added a certain frisson!
Next – messing with rogues, top to bottom!

Obscured By Clouds: Chapter 3 - Battle In the Sky

3 – Battle In The Sky

As Brazi soared upwards, Katlin had noticed dark shapes approaching the Feigh cloud from north. Keen eyes detected creatures with wings bearing down on the Feigh. Perhaps there were 10 of them, perhaps a little more or a little less. The Feigh seemed to have sensed their approach and they turned to face outwards, palms facing out to form a ring around the cloud.
Cornelius has been nodding agreement with Brazi but rose quickly to his feet as he heard Katlin's words of warning.
Description: C:\Users\Public\Pictures\T&T\flying goblin.jpg

Katllin snarled and shucked off her garment (which is designed to be easy to get out of). Then there was a brief moment of eye wrenching shift change, and she became a 180 pound panther! She rose into the air, testing her new power of flight, and joined the hovering Brazi who was checking out the approaching goblins with his sharp bat eyes (bats actually see very well). He grasped his staff like a cricket bat and took a couple of warm us swings.

The Hellkat flexed her formidable claws and showed her impressive fangs.
As the Hellkat and Manbat left the cloud craft, the winds picked up and the rain lashed down. Visibility became poor as darkness enfolded the world about them. Brazi was an experienced navigator of the air currents even in such turbulent conditions but Katlin was not and struggled to master her new power against these grim circumstance. She rose and then plummeted, desperately striving to make the necessary adjustments.

Cornelius Allen had seen 6 goblins homing in on his new friends, two from above and two from each flank. It was clear that they would soon have to fight an aerial battle – possibly a one-sided battle if the Hellkat could not come to terms with the art of flying and the wizard failed to stand against the bitter elements. The goblins had no weapons that they could see but their talons looked razor sharp and the tails ended in a heavy ball which it was easy to imagine whipping down like a hammer on an anvil. They must live their lives in the air and could be expected to be masters of this element.

Brazi saw that the goblins needed their wings to stay airborne. He also saw that they sought to gain altitude to attack from above. "Target their wings," he squeaked to Kat and Cornelius Allen. "That is their weakness. "Hold That Pose will make them fall." He grabbed Kat's scruff and the wizard's belt, and squeaked, "Now! Fly up with all your might. We must rise above them, or be at disadvantage!" The Manbat's  mighty wings now laboured to assist his magically acquired flight powers to take the trio up above their assailants.

As the goblins approached Brazi bombarded the leaders with his very high pitched echolocation squeaks (which are painful and disorienting to some creatures). Being careful not to let his powerful tough batwings strike his friends he prepared to play cricket with goblin heads and wings with his staff.

At the same time Kat let out a Hellkat scream intending to scare the hraka out of the goblins.  It was a truly terrifying sound.

Cornelius Allen succeeded in casting his Hold That pose spell under the pressure of the threat to his life from the winged goblins. He then concentrated on flying and avoiding Brazi's wings, as did Kat before she screamed. The spell took its grip on the innermost of the goblins attacking on Cornelius' side. The fiend frooze in mid-flight and instantly plummeted earthwards. Its companion made no attempt to give help. Cornelius Allen yelled out at the top of his lungs 'Eat dirt, buster!' and shook his fist with one finger sticking out.

Both Kat and Cornelius were able to stay away from Brazi's fearsome wings and felt comfortable in the air with their magical flight capability. The high pitched echolocations emitted by the Manbat appeared to leave the goblins unphased but the Hellkat's scream caused the five attacking goblins to recoil just for a brief moment before they attacked again. Cornelius Allen had never heard the like of Kat's scream and could not help but look at the puma.

Two goblins clawed at Brazi, seeking to avoid his wings and the staff but he had caught a favourable current and was above them. They worked effectively together to offset the altitude advantage the Manbat had, moving deftly about him. It was certain that they appreciated the threat his cricket bat technique posed and they were on the backfoot.
Two more goblins focused on the puma who they could see was a less competent flyer, notwithstanding their assessment of her fangs and claws as a match for the ferocity of her scream

Cornelius Allen had Hold That Pose ready again. As he took in Brazi's instruction, he launched his spell at a goblin, screwing up his handsome features in the effort to get the spell right now he was outside the safe confines of wizard school.

Both Kat and CA now had to be concerned about the obviously lethal wings their friend possessed. To be struck by the down sweep of one of those gargantuan monstrosities would not be good for one's health. They both found the magical flying gift of the Feigh to be comfortable as they lifted up from the cloud craft. Were they confident enough to fly without Brazi's support?

As the great Manbat sought to find a current to take him higher, the goblins closed in. Their grinning faces spoke not of humour but of malice about to be unleashed. They screamed as they came, no doubt hurling insults at these creatures who were with their prey. Those who had any knowledge of the goblin language would have made some sense of their taunts and curses but would have found this to be a harsher, more gutteral tongue than their earth-bound cousins spoke.

Katlin hurled herself on the goblin pair like a buzzsaw! Try to imagine being in the woods and hearing that screech and then seeing the wide fanged jaws and two terrifically clawed paws coming at you like a buzzsaw! Then you get some idea of the attack of the Puma Lady. Sheer feline maternal rage at creatures which killed her babies! She bit and slashed with forepaws, grabbing them and raking with the hind feet claws, a manoeuvre that disembowels one hapless victim. She saw the goblin wings as targets of opportunity, wanting to see how well they fly with a shredded or broken wing. Attacking their wings also gave this highly intelligent monster a way to keep clear of their claws. The Hellkat was very fast even in this alien element.

The first goblin had badly misjudged what would be coming at him. Seeking to claw Katlin, he was overpowered first by her claws, which broke his leading forelimb, and then by the jaws which seized upon his second arm, allowing her to shake him like a rag doll. His eyes rolled in agony. The second goblin rushed in from behind, using his brother’s misfortune to provide and advantage. The goblin slashed with talons much less lethal than Katlin’s but nonetheless with the potential for death. Even whilst she continued to crunch and shake her hapless prey, she spun in mid-flight, whirling the goblin’s body round as a whining, shrieking shield. Largely successful in the manoeuvre, the big cat took spite damage to her left shoulder as the goblin backed off,  awed by the beast he was battling.

Brazi fell on his goblins like a thunderbolt, so comfortable in the air. The skill coupled with the ferocity of the Manbat’s violent attack was too much for the goblins to deal with. After fending off a series of blows, Brazi crunched his flailing staff down on one of the goblin’s wings, shattering bone. It was six and out for the goblin. It fell helplessly from Brazi’s reach, screeching piteously. The second goblin was now much more cautious, feinting left and right, seeking an opening in the batsman’s defences. Brazi played a straight bat and the goblin began to back off from his opponent. Brazi’s staff continued to whirl in a blur of motion and it was clear that the goblin did not fancy contact with the hard wood whirlwind with which it was presented.

Cornelius Allen saw how well the battle in the air was going for his companions and decided to take out the goblin swooping down on him. With a carefully focused finger, the young wizard lined his foe up and unleashes a TTYF .  The goblin howled, blasted backwards by the flash of khremm-charged energy, it’s head smoking from the destructive spell. Knocked off balance, it dropped below the Feigh craft-cloud, spinning hopelessly towards Planet Earth far below.  Cornelius Allen permitted himself a smirk of satisfaction and then checked on his fellow fighters, the Feigh and the other goblins.
He saw that his companions were adept at taking care of themselves and, as the large group of goblins formed a tighter ring about the cloud, ignoring their three falling minions, the Feigh had begun sending out an inflating ring of white light towards their conquerors.

Both Hellkat and Manbat had taken the measure of their foes, and found them wanting.
Kat had also added the fury of being wounded to her normal volcanic wrath, and she was beginning to get the hang of this flying thing. With another petrifying scream of Cougar rage she hurled herself at the remaining gob. Brazi had been cautious until now, but, with a thunderous flap of his mighty wings, he too took the attack to his remaining adversary.

The retreating goblin was not quick enough to elude the Manbat. The staff whirled and scythed in a blur of destruction before landing squarely on the outclassed goblin's skull. Its eyes rolled and its tongue flopped out as the cracking of its skull resounds through the air.
As Kat flung her feline form at the other retreating goblin, one of the band further away had been preparing a different sort of attack.

Taking a leaf out of Cornelius Allen's book, the puma felt the steely grip of another Hold That Pose spell, The cowering goblin's look of terror turned to a twisted smile as the HelKat began to lose altitude - fast!

And the young wizard? He saw two goblins heading towards him armed with spears. That didn't look too good…

Peripherally, all the combatants were aware of a ring of cloud substance, formed and sent out by the Feigh, transforming its shape from a circle to that of a cylinder, enveloping gradually all bar the larger group of goblins who had kept a watching brief over this battle.

Brazi could not bear the risk of Kat falling to her death. Calling to the wizard to follow him in haste, he banked his wings and dove like a hawk after the falling Hellkat. He would use the wings to accelerate his pursuit if needed.

He did need to - Kat was falling like a stone. The Manbat swept away from the goblin cringing as he eyed him up with violent intent and swooped down after the puma.

Cornelius Allen noticed that the goblins were retreating as the Feigh cloud-cylinder formed. He supposed they didn't want to get enclosed by it and he made a mental note to ask the angel-folk about if he lived through this. Desperately hoping that the ruse would work, the wizard yelled "Dragon Breath' at the top his lungs and cast Call Flame against the two goblins with the spears. He sure hoped they wouldn't see through his ruse, faced with the Feigh magic and the threat of dragon fire backed up by real heat scorching their faces!

It worked as far as one of the winged fiends was concerned but its partner in slime cast the flint-tipped missile before dipping its wings and high-tailing it out of there. The goblin wasn't subtle about his intentions and he was hampered by his hair -which he had just discovered had caught fire. The wizard was going to have to get out of the path of the spear before trying anything else.

Brazi's quick reactions enabled him to rescue his love in his strong, big hand, effortlessly taking the puma's weight as he spread his wings again to stop his descent. Gliding smoothly, he then turned on his back to see what or who may be following him. He tucked Kat's limp form under his left arm, holding the formidable staff now in his right hand. As he looked up, he saw two of the goblins coming towards him with a net spread between them.

The wizard meanwhile twisted desperately but the spear flew straight and true on its deadly flight. He was able to do no more than spin as the projectile took him in the left shoulder. Cornelius Allen could not suppress a cry of pain and then saw blood spreading across his armour, through a rent in the leather. He dropped to his knees and screwed up his face in concentration as he tried to stay conscious. Fortunately the Feigh protective cylinder had thwarted the intentions of the goblins but Cornelius Allen wondered in his pain if it could last long - surely if it had great duration the Feigh would not have been cast out by these creatures.

The goblin wizard's spell lost its efficacy now and Kat began to stir in her beloved's secure grasp.
Brazi, seeing the peril of being netted, grasped Kate to his broad chest, squeaked "Hold on, dearest, this could get rough!", and began to manoeuvre vigorously, much like a normal bat will do in pursuit of some insect treat, his huge wings flapping furiously, and his staff held ready to help fend off the net, or strike those trying to cast it over him. At the same time he worked to gain altitude or fly above his pursuers (which would make netting him more difficult) and return to assist Cornelius.

The intentions of the Manbat were sound but reality proved to have sharp teeth. The goblins were encumbered by the net but this was a form of hunting they practiced regularly. Brazi was not so experienced at flying whilst holding a reviving puma - but then who was. The goblins were not about to give the advantage of altitude to the Manbat and they were circumspect about his vicious staff. Despite his determined flapping and torturous feints and twists, the goblins jockey themselves into position to wrap the net round their prey. Kat could do little but scream her Hellkat roar at the goblins.

Cornelius Allen had tried to rise to his feet but the effort was too much for him with the blood loss rapidly draining his energies. He toppled headlong into the cloud cylinder the Feigh had created about them and him. He sprawled in the soft material, head out in the open air, lashed again by the cold, harsh rain. Cornelius Allen saw the danger his two beast friends were in and, with his last reserves of his will, cast a final spell before blackness engulfed him...

The Oh Go Away spell took its grip on one of the net-casting goblins and he spun and fled in sheer panic, yanking the net with him and his fellow off balance with it. Lightning forked down through the black skies and, at this, the goblin leader sounder a trumpet of retreat. The trailing net was within reach of Brazi's clawhands now.

Kat was revived enough to fly, but a little unsure of herself.  Brazi wisely let her go.  He saw his chance to grab the net and use it to his advantage and when he did do, he reeled the goblin in like a fish on a line. The creature was too stupid to let go.
The other goblins flew off, not concerned much about the loss of their net and even less so about their companion. Kat then noticed Cornelius Allen disappearing back into the Feigh cylinder. She was absolutely soaked now and beginning to feel the effects of the cold, way up here in the sky. The thunderclap which then sounded drowned out the goblin's howls. Lightning illuminated their part of the sky, revealing brown streaks now appearing in the Feigh cylinder. She also noticed that their cloud was losing altitude.

Obscured By Coulds - Chapter 2 : The Feigh

As the chain solidified, including the six strange beings and the three travellers, pictures formed clearly in the minds of each one. A huge fortress under a deep blue sky; many other winged beings such as these six walking in misty gardens; towering men and women - giants! - standing tall amidst thunderclouds, laughing in the rain; winged goblins attacking the gentle beings (the Feigh, they now heard the name for these beings used for themselves in their minds) and driving them deep within clouds, thick and deep; the white clouds becoming prisons polluted with brown; groups of the Feigh, always six, desperately attempting to find ways to combat the goblins; these six forming a skyboat from the tarnished cloud substance and seeking help from below; the calls for help meeting deaf ears or violence.

Suddenly the images stopped and the Feigh released their hands, breaking the connection. From above, three ochre-brown cords descended from cloud level, one dangling in front of each of the three travellers. The Feigh floated upwards at a steady rate, soon well beyond reach of earth-locked beings.

Brazi gave a big sigh. "I was always a sucker for helping people." He turned to Katlin as he picked up his quarterstaff. " You do not have to go my love. I will return to you when and if I can." Katlin spat out a word not fit to print here, and snarled back: " You big dumb galoot. How would you ever survive without me? Let the goblins beware!" The two held hands and with their free hands seized their ropes of smoke. They only had eyes for each other now as they were lifted aloft.
Meanwhile, Cornelius Allen reached forward and grabbed hold of the rope, expecting to be pulled in to the air, and even wrapped his foot around the rope for good measure, a bit like the guy above, just if he lost a lot of weight, got rid of the moustache and wasn't inside the gym.

The trio were indeed hauled skywards, to dizzying heights, The air grew colder and even though they felt secure, the wind whipping about their bodies, tugging at their clothing, was definitely disconcerting. The six Feigh floated upwards with them, encircling their guests. After they had risen so high that what were once major landmarks were now no more than unidentifiable blots on the planet far below them, they saw that they were reaching what could only be their destination - a long, bulbous marshmallowy cloud, a sickly brown flecked with brilliant white, looming above them. As they drew near, the Feigh began a plainsong chanting of mournful spirit and the ugly brownness receded a little and an opening emerged in the cloud just where the ropes were attached to it.

They all heard the voices inside their mind again, eerie after the silent ascent. 'Cornelius, Cornelius, Cornelius, fly! Brazi, Brazi, Brazi, soar and be free! Katlin, Kate, Katlin, leap, spring, fly!'

They felt the ropes they held so dearly becoming intangible. The Feigh floated up through the aperture in the cloud raft. All three found themselves, to their astonishment, able to fly! The voices in your head sound again, this time a warning...'stay within sight of our cloud-raft...do not stray...if the white is lost...we are all lost..."
Hands reached down from the opening in the cloud-raft and beckoned threm upwards. They all found it easy to manoeuvre and emerged to see the six Feigh seated cross-legged in a circle, having left room for the three of you to join. As they completed the circle, a question formed in thrir minds, given by their hosts -"...what course of action?...what shall we do?...what can we do?...who will lead us?...who will save us?...one of you...one of you...we shall follow and obey one of you...one of you we shall serve as best we may..."

Cornelius Allen looked first to Brazi and then to Kat. "This flying stuff is weird enough for me. I'm not ready to be a hero - one of you had better sign up for the job. I don't mind sticking around for the action. Where there are goblins and giants, I'm betting there's treasure too. That's what rocks my world! Happy to share with you guys though!'

The Feigh turn expectantly towards Brazi and Katlin.
Brazi doesn't fail to be a little amused at being able to fly. In  his bat form he is a natural and expert flyer and his wings are potent weapons. "If one of us must lead," he said, " I suppose I should take on that burden if the wizard does not wish to do it."

"Big galoot," said Katlin. "You are always trying to tell me what to do, but you are often wise, and I am willing to trust you. What say you, Wizard man?"

"If there is to be trouble and conflict here, replied Tardani, " then I had best take my true form now. Do not be afraid of me, Wizard. I am only dangerous to those who offend or attack me."

The big hunchback peeled off his shirt, and  then there was an eye wrenching form change: a pair of 12 foot long leathery wings  exploded out from his hump. He was now covered with short brown fur and he had the head of a huge bat. Wicked claws tipped the fingers of his big hands and his arms had gotten longer and his legs shorter. His voice now was almost comically high pitched (he could confuse enemies with his ultra high pitched squeaks; it hurt their ears). The Manbat turned to the Feigh, and bowed. "At your service, Feigh folk," he sqeaked. "Where are your enemies, and what do we need to know to best deal with them?"

Cornelius Allan was a little surprised and scared to see Brazi transform and said "Okay you can lead if you want to. I don't mind. But is it usual for you to do that?"  Then Cornelius Allan turned to the Feigh and said "What do we have to do to help?"

At these questions the Feigh began to hum, softly at first and then the heart-rending sound increased in tempo and volume. They seemed unphased by Brazi's transformation and he couldn't help but feel they were expecting it. As the humming reaches a crescendo, a three dimensional map appeared in the mind's eye of the three new cloud riders.

They saw a huge cloud with a massive fortress at the centre surrounded by amazingly varied and intricate cloud sculptures - almost a sculptural forest, it would seem. Ringed about this fortress were much smaller ochre coloured clouds, moored to the gigantic mass. They were above, below and around it - perhaps 30 in number as far as they can tell. The focus then changed and they saw in the distance a murky, muddy brown cloud mass coming towards you. It was not, in fact, moving but their focus that was. They understood rather than saw that these unpleasant cloud forms were inhabited or piloted by the Feigh's goblin foes.

They sensed absolute confusion amongst the six Feigh as to what was required.

At this point, as they looked up, they saw that the heads of the Feigh had slumped forward. The effort of communicating had drained them yet they were still connected to their visitors telepathically. They all understood that they were awaiting leadership, needing a decision to be arrived at that they could not themselves make.

It was scanty information to go on indeed but there seems little choice.

Katlin said, "Who do you want me to kill?"

Brazi turned to Cornelius, and said softly in his squeaky voice, "This is my natural form. I am an animorph, and so is Kate. She will change when she wants to. What do you think we should do, magic user?"
“Well, it looks like those flying goblins things have taken the Feigh’s home so I think we should go there and try to take it back but I thought you were the leader… shouldn’t you decide what to do?” Cornelius spoke to Brazi in a respectful tone of voice.
The Feigh raised their heads again and all looked to Brazi expectantly. The winds began to whip about the cloud voyagers and the extremities of the cloud vessel rose to form an effective break against the elemental forces buffeting the cloud craft, Rain began to fall, slanting across the faces of the travellers from the west. Dark clouds were now scudding across the sky and far off in the distance a booming sound reached their ears.
Brazi said "Perhaps we should fly first to the Feigh folk's cloud home and meet their conquerers." He took up his ironwood quarterstaff in his big hands. "I will lead and you follow on my left wing. Kate, my love, try your new wings on my right." With a great flap of his bat wings the manbat rose into the sky.

Obscured By Clouds - Chapter 1: New Acquaintances

Cornelius Allan was dozing in the afternoon sun on a late summer afternoon when he was disturbed by musical voices apparently coming from behind a hedge about 50 ft away to his left in the field wherein he had stopped to rest. Cornelius Allan felt quite annoyed that his afternoon snooze had been disrupted and got up, intending to investigate.

As he did so the music stopped abruptly. Now he heard voices from the road on the other side of the field. He turned to look and saw two unusual people coming up the well-trod road. The first was a large homely man, some 6 feet 6 inches tall, who was very ugly and had a misshapen body with huge shoulders and an impressive hunch back. He led a donkey which carried his few possessions and had a quarterstaff. He looked strong and healthy despite his disfigurement. He looked friendly.  The woman with him was 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 180 pounds, full figured, a little stocky, with black hair and eyes. She appeared to be about 30 years old, and would fit into the peasant stock in any village. She carried, easily, a back pack. She looked suspiciously at Cornelius Allan.

He got the impression it would not be wise to cross her. He noticed that she seemed to be sniffing in his direction and tested the air often.
The tall hunchback introduced himself': "I am Brazi Tadani, a carter and animal handler. This is my friend and companion, Katlin Kloot. We are traveling south from the city near here, seeking to find a new place to settle down. Kate is shy, but she will be a good friend to have if you prove worthy. We are simple folk and have no quarrel with any that do not try to harm us. Perhaps we could travel on together. There is strength in numbers and I have known there to be bandits and brigands on the roads around these parts. Moments ago I thought I heard music. Did you notice any such thing, sir?"

The young man was quick to reply. "Hello  Brazi Tadani, I am Cornelius Allan, a humble elven wizard from Khosht. Why yes, I did hear music from over there, a moment ago. Do you want to go and check it out?”

As Cormelius Allan made his introduction, the music began again in the distance and three spherical objects came flying over the hedge, smoke pouring out of them as they came. Cornelius Allan and Brazi reacted quickly and nimbly, leaping out of the path of the smoking balls. Katlin was not so fast to respond to the potential danger - she twisted desperately but found herself engulfed by a rapidly billowing brown cloud of smoke. This was compounded when Brazi's staff smashed down violently on one of the globes, shattering it and releasing its entire contents of smouldering incense.

Cornelius was quite safe at that moment but the fog threatened to engulf Brazi, just as it was doing to Katlin. Her eyes teared up and she started spluttering as she dropped to the hard surface of the road as her protective friend suggested. There was no odour to the brown gaseous substance. The music grew louder and faster, instantly penetrating the inner ears of the three travellers.

Of the three travellers, only Katlin was able to make any sense of the music. It codified itself slowly within her comprehension. The musical vibrations ceased to be music but transformed instead into a language just barely comprehensible to the woman. She perceived a broken string of words...'...from above...no harm...must trust...need help...strong friends...be still...be still...coming now...gentle...'
Then the voices stopped and the music did not replace it.

In light of what she has just heard, Kate calmed a little, and called after Brazi: " Wait, my love! Do not harm it. It wants help." Her voice was odd sounding, like she was having trouble with human language. Brazi's keen ears heard her though and he slowed his rush and took a somewhat less aggressive stance. He was still prepared to try and brain the unseen assailant if it attacked him again.
At Kate's words, the prison around her and Cornelius evaporated just as quickly as it had formed. Brazi could see them both once more and could tell they were unharmed. Everyone, excepting the donkey, had now breathed in some of the smoke. Not much but it was sufficient. When the music resumed all three of the travellers could make out the words Kate first comprehended as they were repeated as a broken string of words...'...from above...no harm...must trust...need help...strong friends...be still...be still...coming now...gentle...'

Six winged being floated without moving their wings over the hedge. They all seemed to be female and have an ethereal, ghostly beauty. There was sadness in their eyes. These creatures were about 3 feet  tall and were dressed in gossamer blue tunics coming down to just above their knees. The tunics had seemingly random white swirls amidst the cerulean blue and these white patches could be observed to slowly move within the blue.
All six were linked through holding hands and the outer two seemed to be offering their hands to Kate and to Cornelius.

Katlin came cautiously forward and offered her hand. Brazi put down his quarterstaff and joined her, taking her other hand. He offered his free hand to Cornelius. His hump had settled down now. He watched the six strange beings carefully, but offered no thoughts of malice or treachery to them. Caring now, but cautious, he wanted to know what is going on. Cornelius Allan took the hand Brazi offered and asked out loud 'What is going on? What do you want?'
